Le lion a rugi. Ndiaye Gaindé m’a fait part de la détresse du Sine et du Saloum. Les pluies se font rares, maigres récoltes et maigre bétail. Les lionceaux quittent la tanière et vont se faire rats des villes. Le noble agriculteur et sage berger n’est plus qu’un vulgaire marchand à la recherche du profit.
Les sages Sérères disent pourtant qu’un homme n’est certain que de l’amour que lui portent sa mère et sa femme.

The lion has roared. Njaay Gainde has informed me of the distress of Sine and Saloum. Rains become rare, meager crops and meager livestock. Lion cubs leave the lair and make of themselves towns’ rats. The noble farmer and wise shepherd is no more than a vulgar merchant in search of benefit. Yet, the wise Serers say that a man has certainty of nothing else but only the love that his mother and his wife bear for him.
